Shaped my Sabbatical
Revd Pat Bateman, Vicar of Holy Trinity Claygate, recently joined SOMA UK at a Youth Convention in Kasese, Uganda. The trip marked the beginning of his sabbatical and proved to be the inspiration and kickstart he was hoping for.
There was a joy in being part of a team I wasn’t responsible for, and even more so in seeing what God is doing in the Church of Uganda in South Rwenzori. We experienced thousands of young people worshipping God passionately, and it was incredible fun to join in the dancing. There is much freedom in worship and a huge openness to the work of the Holy Spirit. These was such a hunger for God’s word.
I have come away with a renewed and greater expectation about what God can and does do when we trust him to lead us in mission. Although the team was equipped to serve I feel better equipped for ministry in the years ahead having had this gift of an experience.
I went feeling that I did not know what I could offer. I was able to contribute and trust that it was used by God. It was refreshing and empowering to be part of such and amazing mission. I have been changed by God in some ways but I am confident that God will continue His work in me in the days/months ahead of my sabbatical. I hope the learning continues when I return to normal life and ministry in the new year. I trust that God’s work will be evident in me, and not easily snatched away. This is early days but I would be surprised if I don’t deepen my love and understanding of scripture and ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit.
